the middle of everywhere

The geographic center of the 48 contiguous states is this interesting little spot outside of Lebanon, Kansas, 18 miles from my hometown of Red Cloud, Nebraska. It’s a mile off of U.S. Highway 281, so it’s really kind of in the middle of nowhere. Or in the middle of everywhere, depends on your perspective. When a marker was placed and the flagpole was planted in 1940, I think there were big dreams that it would be a tourist destination. There’s actually an old abandoned motel at the spot that I was told is only barely used every year as a hunting lodge by the absentee owners. One of my favorite parts is the tiny little chapel.

coming out of my shell
Posted on August 20, 2007
A few weeks ago, I was on a drive to Red Cloud, Nebraska, when I came across this giant snapping turtle on U.S. Highway 281 north of town. It had been raining quite a bit, and I guess he must have liked the warmth of the pavement better than the ditch or something. Anyway, I really wanted to move him out of harm’s way, so I stopped. It was such an interesting scene that I just made a bunch of photos until this woman eventually came by and used her foot to move him off to the side. What a nice surprise to come across something I’d never seen before.
