In December I photographed bar pilots that bring ships into the port here in Mobile. It’s a very important job in our area, and it was a lot of fun to see how it works. Climbing down a rope and wood ladder from a moving ship onto a moving pilot boat as they both bounce along on water seems like a cool way to get to work. I’m not sure how cool it would be when the seas were really rough, but it was nice and calm when I went along.

It was a beautiful day Monday on Canaveral National Seashore, just about 23 miles from the final launch of Endeavour. As the space shuttle program winds down, this family from Alaska was happy to see it. The mission included Commander Mark Kelly, the husband of injured Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords.
As big fans of the shuttle program, and as a former mission commander from space camp (Meggan), it was awesome to see Endeavour go up for the last time. Endeavour, we’ll see you next at the California Science Center. Until then, bon voyage.
