When things were winding down for Mardi Gras in Mobile last night, there was a big police presence. About all I will say about this picture is be careful what you say around a large group of cops.

Imagine my surprise last night when Chief Red Cloud, the namesake of my hometown in Nebraska, made an appearance on the front of a float in the Infant Mystics parade last night in downtown Mobile. I probably wouldn’t have known it was supposed to be him if it weren’t for the fact that each float is preceded by a sign with the name of the float. In this case, the sign read, “Red Cloud Chief of the Sioux.”

I was taking photos of this flier in the street, without the beads, and somebody walked along and dropped some right next to it. I don’t know if it was an accident or not, but it sure made the photo more interesting and offered a nice contrast.

While photographing the tail end of this parade as it made its way out of the starting area the other night, Meggan and I were both wondering what was holding things up. It turns out that one of the floats caught on fire.
