I had the chance to spend some time with Cliff and Suzie Delcambre yesterday. The Delcambres ranch 35 or so cows on their 80 acres just outside of Bayou La Batre. Cliff came to ranching after a long career as a local shrimper. He told me that after serving in WWII, he committed himself to feeding the world. Shrimping gave him the opportunity to do that, but shrimping dried up. Now he farms.
Helping the Delcambres yesterday was their 14-year-old great, great nephew, Nick Beckham. Cliff said he is teaching Nick about how to run his farm in the hope that one day, Nick will want to take over for him. I think they are both lucky to have each other.
