Bayou La Batre is home to the Sea School, which trains students for careers working on commercial vessels. They can upgrade their vessel licenses, become able-bodied seamen, or even learn to cook on a ship.
The village has a deep maritime history, and the Sea School is a good example of it.
On Saturday, the students were learning survival skills at the Chandler Branch YMCA in Mobile. One of the students called their rubbery red survival suits “Gumby” suits.
I can see why.
